Wine is Storytelling by the Glass

My name is Csaba, I'm a wine business consultant based in London, UK. I'm the founder of FineWineToMe.com and also Daddy Wine Club - a Sustainable Fashion Band for Wine Lovers.

In this podcast I talked to wine professionals from around the world about anything and everything wine business related.

I often felt that the 'traditional' social media channels, like Instagram or Facebook don't do justice to this topic, so I wanted to put my focus on platforms where there is no real time (or character) limit.

I consider myself honest and open-minded, so I would appreciate your feedback and any constructive criticism.

Enjoy & Cheers!

Is Porta 6 one of the most successful budget wine brands in Europe?
In Episode 5 of Beyond the Label, the mini-series from FineWineToMe - The Wine Business Podcast, I’m joined by Kathleen Smith to analyse the Portuguese crowd-pleaser that seems to be everywhere.
From the instantly recognisable Lisbon tram artwork to supermarket dominance in the UK and US, Porta 6 has built a brand that screams:
✔ Portugal✔ Approachability✔ Value✔ Fun
But here are the real questions:
👉 Is the brand stronger than the wine inside the bottle?👉 Can you “premiumise” a wine that was never meant to be premium?
In this episode, we discuss:
The genius of the Lisbon tram label
Emotional connection and generational recognition
Supermarket success and accessibility
Price positioning (under £9 / under $10)
Why simplicity can be a strategic advantage
Brand score vs liquid score
The risks of trying to upscale a mass-market success
We rate both the branding and the juice - and this episode delivers our first-ever 5/5 score in the series.
💬 Have you tried Porta 6? Does it make you think of Portugal instantly?

Is 19 Crimes one of the smartest wine brands ever created - or simply a very good gimmick? In Episode 4 of Beyond the Label, the mini-series from FineWineToMe - The Wine Business Podcast and The Happy Vine, we analyse one of the most recognisable mass-market wine brands in the world. From convict storytelling to bold black-and-white labels, celebrity partnerships (hello Snoop Dogg), and massive global distribution under Treasury Wine Estates - 19 Crimes has built a brand people remember. But here’s the real question: 👉 Is the wine inside the bottle as strong as the marketing outside it? In this episode we discuss: - The genius of the “19 crimes” origin story - Celebrity endorsements and brand amplification - Mass-market positioning and mainstream appeal - Residual sugar and “crowd-pleaser” wine styles - Brand score vs liquid score - Whether the story sells the wine- or hides it We rate both the brand strength and the wine quality - and the results might surprise you. 💬 Have you tried 19 Crimes? Do you buy it for the story, the price, or the taste? Is Moët & Chandon true luxury… or a mass brand wearing a tuxedo?
In Episode 3 of Beyond the Label, a mini-series from FineWineToMe - The Wine Business Podcast, I’m joined by Kathleen Smith, founder of The Happy Vine, to take a deep, honest look at one of the most recognisable wine brands on the planet.
Moët & Chandon is everywhere - Formula 1 podiums, Golden Globes, luxury launches, bars, restaurants, and retailers worldwide. It’s also the number-one selling Champagne brand globally. But that raises a serious question:
Is Moët still special because of what’s in the bottle - or because of what it represents?
In this episode, we discuss:
Moët’s position as accessible luxury
Whether consistency is a strength or a creative ceiling
Price vs liquid: does the Champagne justify the cost?
Packaging, symbolism, and instant brand recognition
The power of Champagne as a celebration category
How visibility can dilute perceived prestige
Brand score vs liquid score - and why they differ
This isn’t a takedown. It’s a brand reality check - and a reminder that in wine, perception often carries as much weight as what’s in the glass.
👉 Watch, listen, and join the discussion: does Moët still excite you?

Is Cloudy Bay still leading the category - or living off its reputation?
In Episode 2 of Beyond the Label, a mini-series from FineWineToMe - The Wine Business Podcast, I’m joined by Kathleen Smith DipWSET, founder of The Happy Vine, to take an honest, brand-first look at one of the most recognisable wine brands in the world.
Cloudy Bay didn’t just make a successful Sauvignon Blanc - it defined the global style of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. But 40 years on, the big question is: does the brand still feel relevant, exciting, and human?
In this episode, we discuss:
How Cloudy Bay became a global benchmark
Consistency at scale: strength or weakness?
When a brand becomes too safe
The impact of global ownership (LVMH) on brand identity
Why “everywhere” can be a problem for premium wine brands
Packaging, messaging, and the loss of the human story
Price vs quality perception across markets
Whether Cloudy Bay should refresh its style and positioning
This is not a takedown. It’s a respectful, critical discussion about what happens when an iconic wine brand stops evolving.
🍷 Beyond the Label looks past hype and nostalgia - and asks whether great brands can stay great without change.🎙️ Host: 𝐂𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐚 𝐓𝐨𝐭𝐡, Wine Business Consultant, Brand Manager 🎙️ Co-host: 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐢𝐩𝗪𝐒𝐄𝐓, Brand Strategist, Wind Judge, Writer 🎧 Audio available on Podbean & Spotify 📺 Video available on YouTube 👉 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬. Wine has a problem. The wine trade still isn’t listening to the consumer.
In this episode of FineWineToMe – The Wine Business Podcast, I sit down with Amanda Thomson, Founder & CEO of Thomson & Scott Noughty - one of the most influential entrepreneurs in the modern wine world.
Amanda is widely credited with creating the world’s first premium alcohol-free wine brand, launching Noughty in 2019 and helping to build an entirely new category from scratch.
This is not a tasting note episode. It’s a deep dive into consumer behaviour, brand building, innovation, and the future of wine.
In this conversation, we cover:
Amanda’s journey from BBC arts broadcaster to wine entrepreneur
Why the wine industry struggles with innovation
Building Noughty as a wine brand - not an alternative soft drink
The role of personal brand in building trust at scale
Why consumers are smarter than the wine trade thinks
Pricing strategy in alcohol-free wine (and why comparison is flawed)
The real cost of removing alcohol from wine
Sugar, balance, and consumer expectations
On-trade vs off-trade strategy and brand visibility
Why alcohol-free wine is a category - not a trend
What will make non-alcoholic brands survive when the bubble bursts
Amanda is refreshingly honest, unapologetically consumer-focused, and deeply thoughtful about where wine is heading next.

If you’re interested in wine business, brand strategy, entrepreneurship, innovation, or the low- and no-alcohol category, this episode is essential viewing.
